Burning Birch X 3, the Worldwide Film Festival of Short Art Films By Artists at the Trash Palace,

 The defining characteristic of art is poetry.  For all the things that art can be, without poetry it is not.  

Burning Birch X3, the worldwide festival of short art films and videos by artists at the Trash Palace in Toronto May 26, was an evening of visual poetry.  Without a pre-selected theme, the program revealed a number of shared commonalities from contemporary artists around the world who work with film and video as an art form.  These include art as a sacred ritual, art as an expression of joy, as moving paintings and drawings.

The Critical Wake of Makemake @ Fountain Enterprises

The Critical Wake of Makemake is an imagined manifestation conjured through abstraction and the yet un-realized vessel moving towards antirealism.  It is a fictional understanding communicated through a state of constant becoming.  It is created in order to claim its rightful place in the present.  The inheritance is colour and transparency, rituals and rites of masks, concealment and revealing.  Metaphors are forms as openings and objects conveying the relationships of struggle, power, ease and awkwardness through overlapping and propinquity.  Power can be seen as European realism still trumping other cultural, individual and philosophical alternatives.  Abstraction can be seen as the rejection to this that it was 70 years ago.

The Critical Wake of Makemake is also a live performance by the art noise band 253469 starting at 9pm on Thursday December 15th, using absurdist lyrics, analogue and digital synthesizers and a loud electric stick guitar.
Exhibition runs 12.15.11 - 01.25.12

Climbing the Pink Tree

Climbing the Pink Tree exhibition, screening, live audio, installation and performance opens Saturday March 19th at 9PM.

The main space will show the premier screening of "The Tree That Makes Me Laugh" by Wesley Rickert (10 minutes), with improvised live audio performance. Also in the main space, an installation performance by the Goddess of Pink Dreams Amber Dawn Scott. In the front windows, "Chopping the pink tree" is an installation by Wesley Rickert.

"Movement comma movement; collective dream 26" is a pro-global sub-atomic art particle summit of demanding short art films, irrational video, new sound and short performance. Security costs for this extra-ordinary one night art event plummeted from an initial estimate of over one billion billion billion Canadian to just a little over nothing.

The Callis a meditative fake documentary (not a mockumentary) about the thin line between knowledge and insanity, learning and losing it. As the G20 caravan of doom troopers rolls through town and promotes ignorance and fear of authority, this adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft tale reminds us that we should lean into the fear and seek to know more... even if it means the end result is that we are no more.

Fish Freezing Factory

Based on an abandoned Icelandic building, 'Fish Freezing Factory' is a visual apparition of the spirit lost to an Icelandic Fish processing factory.It is a projection of images of my work onto the abandoned fishing plant building at night, filmed, and then digitally manipulated. It is inspired by the mythology and magic of the Icelandic culture, the history of Skagaströnd town where the building is situated, and influenced by the Northern Lights. The audio features a sample by Icelandic band Múm.

Optimistic Landing

Optimistic Landing is an exhibit of large format paintings on paper, plastic and canvas accompanied by words and video created in the spring of 2010 @253469.


May 29 - June 12


Optimistic Landing is painting about play in the context of a largely pessimistic and cynical world. The paintings are water based and oil based paints on industrial weight kraft paper, stretched canvas and flexible plastic created over a three week period in April (the ideal month for optimism in Toronto!) I started painting on plastic after I found a discarded plastic poster at the side of the curb in the downtown core. I liked the effect, the transparency and smoothness of the material. I also painted on large pieces of heavy brown paper which I primed in ten foot lengths. I cut them to size when I was ready to apply colour. In the spirit of play I decided not to meticulously and evenly cut the edges. There are rips and tears that haven't been covered up or repaired. They are small signs of rebellion, happy imperfections and gestures of a playful toughness, well weathered, not delicate.


All of the oil paintings have the same palette of orange, purple, yellow, pink and green. The lines, drips, dribbles, scribbles, slops and strokes are energetic, necessary and new reflecting the organic, spontaneous and emotive qualities of play.  Play is an attitude in an organic process instead of a constructed one.

Desert of Woo woo

A random program of short art films, video loops, improvised audio & performance driven by the twin concepts of Woo woo and Aleatoricism. The evening will feature a large set construction to receive any and all projections and manifestations as well as mechanized performers. There will be an end of Woo woo party.
